On May 14th, Gov. Evers announced a special election to fill the remainder of Mike Gallagher’s term In Congress in Wisconsin’s 8th Congressional District.


Understandably, this can be confusing. We have answers and will provide updates when important information becomes available.

Why Is Governor Evers calling this special election now? Why not wait to seat someone in January?

Rep. Gallagher leaves the 8th District without representation for almost nine months. Important votes will take place throughout the year, Including In the two months following the general election. The Special Election allows WI-08 to be represented In Congress sooner, especially during the lame duck session when crucial votes will likely take place that will Impact our lives.

When is the special election?

The Special Election will be held at the same time and dates of the partisan primary and general election.


The primary will be on August 13, 2024 for both the Special Election and the General Election.


The Special Election will be held on November 5, 2024.


One ballot. Two Races. Two Ovals to Fill.

What is the deadline for candidates to turn in their collected signatures?

June 3rd Is the deadline.


Candidates will likely want their completed papers back earlier than June 3rd to ensure time to review and properly submit them to Madison.

I signed nomination papers for a WI-08 candidate for the regular election. Can I sign them again?

Yes!

While the Special Election and the Regular Election occur on the same ballot at the same time, they are TWO SEPARATE ELECTIONS. This means you can sign the nomination papers for the special election in addition to signing papers for the regular election.


You may still only sign for one candidate in the special election and one in the regular election.

Do the candidates have to collect more signatures for this new election?

Yes!

Just like the regular election, each candidate must follow the requirements to gain ballot access for the special election. This means that the WI-08 candidates must meet the signature requirements for each race they want to vie for.

What are the signature requirements and how do I sign papers for the candidates?

Each candidate must get a minimum of 1000 signatures to be on the regular ballot for WI-08. As of May 14th, candidates who wish to participate In the special election must get an additional minimum of 1000 signatures on separate nomination papers to qualify.
